Admission into Nigerian universities: 6 things to expect 2022/23

Admission into university in Nigeria has not been easy any year. Whether the year there was no post utme or when post utme was reintroduced, it has been a competitive affair.

Getting into university in 2022 won’t be any easier, though 100% achievable. This is due to many factors that has casted doubt on whether people will get into school this year or not.

Moreover, the academic calendar of many universities under ASUU has been really affected. Therefore, it is yet to be seen how some universities will accommodate new students in 2022/2023.

Here are few facts you should know ahead of the 2022 admission.

1. Year one students are still in year one

One of the reasons admission may be even more competitive this year is the fact that 100 level students from last session are still in 100 level.

The only students whom have moved to 200 level are those in state universities not under ASUU, e.g DELSU.

Because of that, and with JAMB looking to sell forms again in 2023, there is uncertainty around admission this year.

In fact, most universities are already giving guidelines for online post utme screening. All to meet up with admitting new students

2. Admission will be more competitive

Reports that over 1.8 million students enrolled 2022 JAMB was popular earlier this year. Meanwhile, the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has consistently said only about 600,000 can be admitted.

That is less than half of the total amount of students who took JAMB.

If that is anything to go by, admission into universities will be more competitive this year.

Why?

Only about 33% of the total number of students who wrote JAMB can be admitted into school this year. This mean 67% of people who sat for UTME won’t be admitted. Its a sad fact.

And that also account for the reason some students consider predegree. You can check out this guide: what is predegree in Nigeria? here is all you need to know.

3. Expect screening at some universities

Some universities are starting to give indications that they will conduct only screening for aspirants this year. This is due to the negative impact the long ASUU strike has had on academic calendar.

So you should prepare yourself for online screening as your school of choice might decide to do just screening and not write post utme.

While other schools may conduct online screening.

What is online screening?

Online screening means uploading your required documents (O’level result, UTME result, Post UTME registration slip) on the university website.

In online screening, admission is given based on your uploaded documents because there is no exam.

4. Watch our for subject combination

Subject combination is one of the criteria that determines admission into the university. With more competition this year for limited admissions spaces, subject combination will be more critical.

Make sure that you have chosen the subjects in JAMB and O’level that are relevant to the course you want to study.

How do I know the correct subject combination?

You can find it here: JAMB subject combination for all courses.

5. Do a change of course/institution if you have to

A change of institution/course may just save the day for you if you want to gain admission this year.

This is particularly important if you scored less than 200 in JAMB and applying for highly competitive courses like Medicine, Law, Accounting, Architecture, Nursing.

You’ll require a very impressive jamb score to stand a chance of being admitted into any of those courses this year. A change of course may just be what you need.

Even a change of university might help as well, especially with some universities having lower cut off marks than others,

For example, while UNICAL JAMB cut off mark is 160, that of UNIBEN is 200. In other words, you only need to have scored at least 160 in JAMB to qualify for UNICAL post utme.

Same way you need to score at least 200 to qualify for UNIBEN post utme.

Therefore, a candidate who scored 215 in JAMB and applying for Law has a greater chance for admission into UNICAL than UNIBEN.

6. Admission processes will be fast

Unlike previous years, admission will be a lot faster this year. That’s because of the academic year the pandemic and ASUU strike has hindered.

Post UTME, change of course and admission list will happen quick. So you may need to make up your mind faster and receive reliable information for your school of choice.

With 2023 JAMB registration soon to start, 2021/2022 admissions (in most schools) and 2022/2023 will be concluded as quickly as possible to make way for UTME.

While this list is not exhaustive, I encourage you to keep these tips in mind so nothing surprises you.

Whatever the case, my hope is that you will get admission this year.
