What you should know about campus life | university, poly, college

Campus days they say, are the best days of your life.

Getting into school, especially the university at first might seem difficult but if you can find your feet, it will be incredible. And you should know that life on campus presents you with a lot of opportunities.

Yesterday we wrote a post showing you 6 things you should do before finishing school. Opportunities was one of them.

But then, you also want to learn about the uncertainties about campus life so you can better prepare yourself for them.

What are the things I should know about school life?

Here are things you should know about campus life.

1. It was your decision

First things first. You should know that it was your own decision to come to campus or the higher institution. You own it.

So, focus your attention on who you want to become and achieve that which you came to achieve at the higher institution.

And you won’t achieve much if you don’t know about relationships. Good enough, we wrote on that already: how to build healthy relationships in school. It’s a must do.

2. Expect changes

Don’t forget that you’re now in a new environment and certain changes are bound to occur. Knowing this helps you prepare for it.

Whether the change will be negative is up to you. While meeting new people and sharing ideas or being part of a success team is positive change, addiction, drug use, or unwanted pregnancy are negative changes.

Moreover, most of these changes may never leave you the same way you were when you entered school.

In this new environment, you’ll be meeting new people, new and different ways of living, new opportunities. Be sure to open up your heart and mind wisely to all these as you’ll be acquiring knowledge every day on campus.

Talking about meeting new people, a roommate is one of them especially if you want to stay in the hostel or can’t leave alone off campus. See this post on how to live with a roommate on campus.

3. Sporting activities overflow

You may like and want to participate in sports. It’s all fine.

After all, participating in sports or other fitness procedure helps to ease tension and anxiety. It also helps in keeping you fit for your school work daily.

Many kinds of sports are available in most Nigerian campuses. Lovers of football, basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis, volleyball can look forward to their games on campus.

4. So many classes to attend

The university, polytechnic or college is not secondary school. There’s always going to be lectures to attend here and there.

However, you should attend classes. Have it as a priority that your main aim of coming to school is to gain knowledge and to obtain a degree. And without attending classes, it’s not going to yield results.

We wrote an article showing you how to get good grades in school. It’s a must read.

5. So many things to spend money on

It is well said that tertiary institutions are debiting houses. There’s always going to be debits. It’s either you are paying for this, or paying for that.

It’s either you need to do this, or need to do that. That’s in addition to the many wants we tend to have – things that are not necessary or important. Sadly, this or that involves plenty of resources.

What you can do?

Stick to your budget. As a student on campus, you may want to go out of budget sometimes just to get some eye-catching items.

But you’re advised to stick to your budget to avoid unnecessary spending that will lead to shortage of finance, so you will not be stranded.

That can even help you save money too. Here is how to save money at school.

6. Watch out for academic advisor

Ever heard of that? You are forgiven if you haven’t because many undergraduates don’t know the role of an academic advisor.

Some have never heard of it. And that’s because fellow students have taken the role of academic advisors since most appear too busy. While others are not accessible by students.

Remember I mentioned earlier that tertiary institution is not secondary school. So they don’t spoon feed you by showing you everything.

Its important to meet with your academic advisor in school, especially if you are a low-achieving student academically. This is to help ensure you’re on the right track and having the right credit.

You wouldn’t want to get to your final year and find out that you wouldn’t be able to graduate with your mates because you’re short of credit.

7. No one is an island on campus

Ask for help when necessary. Always learn how to speak up.

If you’re going through difficulty in your studies, social life or maybe you’re being bullied, harassed or oppressed on campus, speak to a tutor or someone more experienced than you. Don’t fail to report to a higher authority where necessary.

Many challenges like these on campus can be easily solved by speaking up.

In a nutshell, here are the things you should know about campus life.

  1. It was your decision
  2. Expect changes
  3. Sporting activities overflow
  4. So many classes to attend
  5. So many things to spend money on
  6. Watch out for academic advisor
  7. No one is an island
