Education; a tool for rural development in 21st century

education

Education is a fierce tool for the eradication of illiteracy, poverty and ignorance and it is not all about going to school (although it is a basic source of education), it is also about being teachable, attending seminars, learning from our everyday life, doing researches, and other forms of learning.

As we all know, those living in the rural areas are less privileged than those living in the urban or city areas because most people who stay in the rural areas have little or no opportunity to travel or attend seminars or even go to a good school.

In my research, I found out that most schools in the rural areas are under developed and as a result of this, the students or pupils do not get quality education as it is supposed to be.

This is where the government comes in, government neglect the schools in the rural areas because they feel it is not in the city and therefore they have to make do with what they see but it is wrong because it is the same children who are attending these low budget schools that the people claim are leaders of tomorrow.

Leadership has to start somewhere and quality education is at the top of that list. Education has a way of mending the society. If only one side of the country is being developed and the other is of a very low standard then I don’t think this country will be more developed than it is currently, which is way short of development of the 21st century.

It is a fact that there are government schools scattered in many villages, but it is not about building structures but ensuring the implementation of good and quality education.

Most of these schools are of low standards compared to the top private schools in the cities.

Avenues should be created where these children learn outside the classroom, they should go for competitions with other schools, have an adequate learning environment and above all, competent and qualified teachers.

If all these are implemented then the gap between the top private schools and the government schools will be bridged and gradually the rural areas will be as developed as the cities.

Some may say development begins with having tarred road, electricity, good water and others but the truth is; development begins with the mindset. If the mindset is in the right place then development can begin.

Now, how can we build or develop our mindset? It starts by attending seminars, talk shows, awareness campaigns, reading books, and also researches.

People who grew up in villages did not have the kind of opportunity that we have now in this country.

Things have become easier and accessible. But then it is not everyone that has the privilege of being part of the above mentioned.

If time is taken by the government and other private bodies (who look forward to the development of this country) to organize awareness campaigns, educational seminars and so on, people who don’t have the privilege of owning a mobile phone, or funds to attend these events in the big cities will be intrigued to learn and apply the knowledge to their everyday life.

Through events like this, their mindset begins to develop and they train their children in that way.

Education has been very helpful to so many communities that were once poor and under developed. It is through education that people get to learn other cultures and norms and beliefs and practices of other people and also how to adapt the good ones to their day to day activities.

Private schools Vs Public schools: what you need to know

Education can really bring light to those thick rural areas that hasn’t seen the light yet.

Education helps one to know and practice survival skills in case of unfortunate situations such as earthquake, flood, and other natural disasters.

According to Wikipedia, survival skills are techniques that a person may learn and use in order to sustain life in any type of natural environment or built environment. The skills also support proper knowledge and interactions with other people.

Education helps those living in the rural areas to have better communication skills which is a part of developing the mindset, helping them to engage in more meaningful and beneficial conversations with people who are on a higher level and also it helps to change their mindset about some local practices such as female genital mutilation, early child marriage, amongst others.

The value of education cannot be over emphasized because it cuts across every area of one’s life and everything we do and know today is because of education but what makes it a tool for rural development is the application of the 21st century sense and tools as well as technologies to the things we learn everyday.

That way, we will begin to have more developed areas where the cultures are retained and the life-threatening practices are curbed.
