2021 federal government scholarship for Nigerian students

Application is now open for 2021 Federal government scholarship.

This scholarship is available to Nigerian undergraduate and postgraduate students to study abroad.

Can I know more about this federal government scholarship?

i. This scholarship is provided by the Federal government of Nigeria through the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA).

ii. The scholarship is available for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate study at selected countries abroad.

iii. Students who want to study at undergraduate level should be willing to study in one of the following countries:

  1. Algeria;
  2. Egypt;
  3. Hungary;
  4. Morocco;
  5. Romania;
  6. Russia;
  7. Tunisia.

iv. Students who want to study at postgraduate level should be willing to study in one of the following countries:

  1. China;
  2. Hungary;
  3. Mexico;
  4. Serbia;
  5. Russia.

v. You see all the eligible countries for this federal government scholarship are non-English speaking countries.

Bear in mind that you’ll undertake a mandatory one-year language course of your chosen country. Especially since the medium of learning at university is their language.

vi. The federal government scholarships are awarded each year to deserving Nigerian students to study at various universities abroad.

Which programs are covered?

Only the under-listed courses are covered by this federal government scholarships for Nigerians:

Undergraduate study:

  1. Architecture;
  2. Agriculture;
  3. Biotechnology;
  4. Environmental Sciences;
  5. Engineering courses;
  6. Geology;
  7. Languages (language courses);
  8. Law;
  9. Mathematics;
  10. Medicine (limited number);
  11. Neurology;
  12. Pilot Engineering;
  13. Sciences
  14. Sports;
  15. Social Sciences.

Postgraduate study:

ALL Masters and PhD fields are eligible for funding.

Which Nationalities are eligible?

This federal government scholarship is open to citizens of Nigeria only.

Who’s eligible?

To be considered for this scholarship, you must meet the following eligibility criteria.

Undergraduate study:

To be eligible for this federal government scholarship at undergraduate level, you must:

1. Have at least five (5) distinctions (As and Bs) at May/June SSCE in subjects relevant to the course you wish to study. The distinctions must include English Language and Mathematics.

2. Be between 17 – 20 years old. That is, be at least 17 years and not more than 20 years old at the time of applying.

3. Your WAEC certificate should not be more than:

(i) two (2) years (i.e must have been gotten in 2019 or 2020) if you want to study in a Non-African country.

(ii) one (1) year (i.e must have been gotten in 2020) if you want to study in an African country.

NOTE: Only WAEC result is accepted if you’re applying for Bachelor in Imamat in Algeria.

Postgraduate study:

To be eligible for federal government scholarship at postgraduate level, you must:

1. Hold a bachelor’s degree with First Class or Second Class Upper.

2. Not be more than 35 years old for Master’s program and 40 years old for PhD program.

3. Have completed the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC).

Therefore, only NYSC discharge or exemption certificates are accepted.

NOTE:

(i) Applicants who are previous beneficiaries of foreign scholarships must have gotten at least two (2) years work experience in Nigeria on completing their previous degree.

(ii) Working class applicants must provide evidence of readiness to be released by an employer.

(iii) Only WAEC result is accepted if you’re applying for Quran Teaching/Professor and Imam Preacher Training for Islamic Religious Studies in Algeria.

(iv) All applicants who wish to study in Russia must have obtained their Bachelor’s degree from a Russian university.

How do I apply?

First, know that application for federal government scholarship is FREE.

Application is to be completed online. Please carefully follow the application procedure below to apply.

Here are the required documents to apply for federal government scholarship:

A. Undergraduate scholarship:

  1. WAEC result;
  2. Local government identification letter (also known as state of origin);
  3. Birth certificate.

B. Postgraduate scholarship:

  1. WAEC result;
  2. Bachelor’s degree certificate;
  3. NYSC discharge or exemption certificate;
  4. Local government identification letter (also known as state of origin);
  5. Birth certificate.

Applying for federal government scholarships online

For applicants who want to study in Hungary:

  1. Go to https://stipendiumhungaricum.hu.
  2. The application page will be opened by October/November, 2020.
  3. Complete the application there when it starts.

For applicants who want to study in other eligible countries:

  1. Go to https://education.gov.ng/fsb.
  2. Complete the application form online.
  3. Print a copy of the completed application form.

After applying what next?

Wait for the list of shortlisted candidates to be released.

Candidates shortlisted for the federal government scholarship will be required to submit the following documents to the scholarship board:

1. Authenticated copies of all academic certificates;

2. National Identity Number (NIN);

3. Copy of International Passport showing your personal information;

4. Specified Medical Report from a government hospital and

5. Police Clearance Certificate (where necessary).
