These awards are full postgraduate scholarships. So the following costs are covered:

  • Reimbursement of money spent for visa application processing.
  • An economy class air ticket to Cape Town, South Africa for awardees who are
    • citizens and/or residents of an African country other than South Africa or
    • residing in South Africa but outside of Cape Town.
  • Full tuition fees and international student fees.
  • Accommodation in a student residence managed by the UCT Student Housing Admissions and Advocacy Services at UCT.
  • Medical cover with a recommended medical aid service provider.
  • A living stipend; to be used to cover ad hoc expenses pertaining to awardees’ studies.
  • Meals through the student housing system at UCT.
  • A book allowance to purchase the prescribed textbooks required for the degree programme.
  • Access to an internship opportunity, career development and job placement assistance.
  • Costs related to community activities as prescribed by The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town.
  • An economy class air ticket home upon completion of studies, for awardees who are i) citizens of and/or residents of an African country other than South Africa or ii) residing in South Africa but outside of Cape Town.

What you should know about these full postgraduate scholarships in South Africa

Before starting an application, please note the following:

– This full masters scholarship in South Africa is funded by Mastercard Foundation, through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.

– The scholarship is awarded toward a pursuit of a full-time postgraduate honors or master’s degree in selected fields.

– Awards will be given on the basis of academic merit, financial need, and leadership potential of applicants.

– More importantly, this scholarship is for students who intend to study at University of Capetown starting in 2021. Such students should be willing to commence registration at UCT.

– A total of 48 masters scholarship and 10 postgraduate honors will be awarded this year.

– Scholarship is awarded annually to deserving African students only.

Who can apply?

The following eligibility criteria applies to the award of these full postgraduate scholarships in South Africa.

To be successful, you must:

  1. be a citizen of an African country.
  2. have admission into a full-time postgraduate course at University of Capetown. That will enable you commence your first year registration in the Engineering and the Built Environment, Commerce, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, or Sciences faculties at UCT at UCT in 2021.
  3. be from an economically disadvantaged background.
  4. demonstrate financial need, and leadership potential.

The following persons are NOT eligible for this scholarship at UCT:

  • Applicants who intend to register for a second postgraduate degree at the same level.
  • Applicants who have previously registered for an postgraduate degree at any higher learning
    institution.

The following documents are needed to complete your mastercard postgraduate scholarship application.

This is to enable you prepare a complete application.

  • Your Curriculum Vitae (CV) of no more than two(2) A4 pages using the following points as context:
    ⎯ Participation in Extra-Curricular Activities.
    ⎯ Skills and Interests.
  • Certified copy of Identity Document, Passport or Refugee Papers.
  • Academic and/or Professional.
  • Certified copies of all Secondary education transcripts.
  • Certified copies of all current and previous Tertiary education transcripts.
  • 2 Academic Referee Reports.
  • Applicants are required to produce translated copies of all academic transcripts and academic referee reports where English is not the primary language.
  • Referees may attach additional pages or documentation in support of the recommendation on the official institutional letterhead with original signature, stamp and date in support of the applicant.

How do I submit Mastercard postgraduate scholarship form?

You’ll submit your scholarship application at Mastercard foundation vulvar page.

Please follow the procedure below.

Note:

  • Applicants who do not have a UCT network account (e.g. [email protected]) are required to submit a written request for Vula access to [email protected].
  • Applicants are advised to use the following subject line: “I want to apply to be a scholar at UCT in 2021”. Once the request is submitted, access will be granted within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Applicants will need to login to Vula using the authorised Vula ID and password through this link: http://www.vula.uct.ac.za
  • Click ‘Membership’ (you’ll find it on the left side of the screen).
  • Click on the ‘Joinable Sites’ button and search for ‘Apply to be a MCF Scholar’.
  • Click on ‘Join site’ to become a site participant. Only site participants can submit an application for a Mastercard Foundation scholarship.
  • Click on ‘Dropbox’
  • Click on ‘Upload Files’ to upload the completed scholarship application form and other supporting documents.
