This scholarship is a full scholarship. Therefore, it covers the following:

  • Reimbursement of money spent for visa application processing.
  • An economy class air ticket to Cape Town, South Africa for awardees who are
    • citizens and/or residents of an African country other than South Africa or
    • residing in South Africa but outside of Cape Town.
  • Full tuition fees and international student fees.
  • Accommodation in a student residence managed by the UCT Student Housing Admissions and Advocacy Services at UCT.
  • Meals through the student housing system at UCT.
  • Medical cover with a recommended medical aid service provider.
  • A living stipend; to be used to cover ad hoc expenses pertaining to awardees’ studies.
  • A book allowance to purchase the prescribed textbooks required for the degree programme.
  • Costs related to community activities as prescribed by The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town.
  • Access to an internship opportunity, career development and job placement assistance.
  • An economy class air ticket home upon completion of studies, for awardees who are i) citizens of and/or residents of an African country other than South Africa or ii) residing in South Africa but outside of Cape Town.

What you should know about these full scholarships to study in South Africa

It is important to get much details as possible before starting an application.

I decided to compile these important points for you to note about all what this full scholarship entails.

– The scholarship is funded or sponsored by the Mastercard Foundation.

– Mastercard Foundation sponsor hundreds of African students each year (from July) to study in South Africa.

– This scholarship is fully funded and to be taken at the University of Capetown (UCT), South Africa.

– These scholarships are for full-time undergraduate courses only.

– A total of 17 undergraduate scholarships will be awarded this year.

– The scholarship is for the full duration of your undergraduate course at UTC. However, it’s renewable annually subject to satisfactory academic performance.

Plus, demonstration of a track record of participation in the activities and opportunities offered by the Program.

Bottom line is, renewal is not automatic because your academic progress will count.

What fields are covered by this scholarship?

Only full-time undergraduate courses in the following Faculties are eligible for these full scholarships:

  • Sciences
  • Commerce/Business
  • Health Science
  • Humanities
  • Law
  • Engineering.
  • Environmental Sciences and Built Environment

Who can apply?

To be awarded this full scholarship, you must:

  1. be an African student. That is, be a citizen of an African country.
  2. be willing to study at the University of Capetown, South Africa.
  3. have admission into an undergraduate course at University of Capetown. So that you’re able to commence your first year registration in any of the eligible courses above at UCT in 2021.
  4. be from an economically disadvantaged background.
  5. demonstrate financial need, and leadership potential.

You might want to check out:

NOTE: Applicants who fall into any of these categories are NOT eligible for this full scholarship:

  1. you intend to register for a second undergraduate degree at the same level in UCT.
  2. you have previously registered for an undergraduate degree at another higher institution.

In addition to the eligibility criteria above, please note the following:

  • The comments on your academic abilities by the academic referees will form part of the academic criteria for this scholarship.
  • You will be required to produce translated copies of all academic transcripts where English is not the primary language. That is, if the official language of your country of origin is not English and your certificate is not in English.
  • You must declare your financial status on the Mastercard scholarship application form.
  • Successful applicants will be required to produce the original academic transcripts on arrival and registration at UCT, South Africa.

How to apply

As mentioned earlier, you must be admitted into an undergraduate course at UCT to get this scholarship.

That’s not so hard to understand, I guess.

Therefore, the first thing you need to do is apply to a full-time undergraduate course at UCT. And be given admission or placement.

Just so you know, you won’t be awarded this scholarship if you don’t have an admission offer at UCT.

Even if you filled the scholarship application form, your application will be incomplete.

Required documents to apply for this full scholarship

The following documents are needed to complete your mastercard scholarship application.

  • Certified copy of Identity Document, Passport or Refugee Papers.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) of no more than two (2) A4 pages using the following points as context:
    • your participation in Extra-Curricular Activities.
    • your skills and Interests.
  • Academic and/or Professional Experience Certified copies of all Secondary/high school education transcripts.
  • Academic Referee Reports. Referees may attach additional pages or documentation in support of the recommendation on the official institutional letterhead with original signature, stamp and date in support of the applicant.

Mastercard foundation Scholarship Essay

Applicants’ are required to submit an essay, of no more than 2000 words using the following points:

  • In which ways do you envisage contributing to the economic growth and social development of your country and Africa on completion of your studies, using your education as leverage?”
  • Explain any community service activities you have been involved in.
  • List the qualities that, for you, define leadership and elaborate on leadership initiatives that you have undertaken.

How do I submit my completed scholarship application form?

You’ll need to submit your scholarship application at Mastercard foundation vulvar page.

Please follow the procedure below.

Note:

  • Applicants who do not have a UCT network account (e.g. [email protected]) are required to submit a written request for Vula access to [email protected].
  • Applicants are advised to use the following subject line: “I want to apply to be a scholar at UCT in 2021”. Once the request is submitted, access will be granted within 24 to 48 hours.
  • Applicants will need to login to Vula using the authorised Vula ID and password through this link: http://www.vula.uct.ac.za
  • Click ‘Membership’ (you’ll find it on the left side of the screen).
  • Click on the ‘Joinable Sites’ button and search for ‘Apply to be a MCF Scholar’.
  • Click on ‘Join site’ to become a site participant. Only site participants can submit an application for a Mastercard Foundation scholarship.
  • Click on ‘Dropbox’
  • Click on ‘Upload Files’ to upload the completed scholarship application form and other supporting documents.
  • Congratulations, you’ve successfully applied for the Mastercard foundation full scholarship.

Deadline
