Applications are now open for the 2023-2024 Gates Cambridge scholarship to study in the UK. This page has all the details.
The Gates Cambridge scholarship is funded through generous support from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Here is how the scholarship is distributed for postgraduate programmes:
80 fully funded scholarships are available each year. This enable international applicants pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any area of study at the University of Cambridge. Approximately two-thirds of these awards are offered to PhD students (others are for masters).
Scholarship Package
Gates Cambridge scholarship covers the full cost of studying for a postgraduate degree at University of Cambridge.
Specifically, the scholarship covers:
i. University of Cambridge fees.
ii. a maintenance allowance for a single student (£18,744 for 12 months at the 2022-23 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months) – for PhD scholars the award is for up to 4 years.
iii. one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of your programme.
iv. inbound visa costs & the cost of the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Who can apply?
To become eligible for Gates Cambridge scholarship you must meet the following criteria.
1. Be a citizen of any country outside the UK.
2. Apply to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses at the University of Cambridge:
- PhD
- MSc/MLitt
- One year postgraduate course.
But take note that the scholarship does not support any of the following programmes.
- Any Undergraduate degree such as BA (undergraduate) or BA affiliated (a second BA)
- Business Doctorate (BusD)
- Master of Business (MBA)
- Master of Finance (MFin)
- PGCE
- MBBChir Clinical Studies
- MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
- Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
- Part-time degrees
- Non-degree courses

Deadline
Depending on the course you applied for at Cambridge, the closing date can be either 1 December, 2022 or 5 January 2023.
