Gaining admission into a Nigerian university is one of the toughest task for many people. Gaining admission into UNICAL is no different.
The University of Calabar is one of the popular destinations for Nigerian students. Each year, about 30,000 candidates make UNICAL their first choice in JAMB.
Surprisingly, only about 9,000 students are offered admission each year. With most candidates admitted to study courses other than the one they choose in JAMB.
Since admission is competitive, there are several ways to get admission into UNICAL. I will show you ‘how’ in this blog.

There are many things to know about studying in UNICAL. The university currently have a student population of almost 40,000. Which means the school is popular among students.
How to gain admission into UNICAL
Below are seven ways to gain admission into the University of Calabar in the 2021/2022 academic year.
1. Through UTME
Did you take the 2021 UTME? Did you make UNICAL your first choice?
If your answer to those questions are “yes”, then you are on the right track.
The primary way to gain admission into UNICAL is by taking UTME. If you score at least 160 in UTME, you qualify for UNICAL post utme.
However, UNICAL didn’t conduct post utme in 2020. What they did is that admission was given directly through JAMB scores.
After the post utme, UNICAL releases admission cut off marks for various courses. If you pass the cut off mark for your course, you are normally offered admission.
Gaining admission into UNICAL through UTME is as straight forward as ABC. And here are 6 secrets of scoring 300+ in UTME.
2. Through Direct Entry
Direct Entry, also known as DE is similar to utme. Though it is for candidates who have attended a tertiary institution.
Have you obtained a degree from a university?
Do you have a national diploma from a polytechnic?
Do you have a certificate or degree in education from a college of education?
Do you hold a certificate from a college of health?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the those questions, then you are qualified for admission into UNICAL through direct entry in 2021/2022.

3. Through Predegree
Predegree is a one year remedial programme. On completion, you are admitted into the university to start from 100 level. UNICAL runs predegree programmes.
Besides, predegree is a popular way to get admission into UNICAL. Because admission consideration is usually given to students who do predegree.
However, its not all courses that you can get admission into through predegree in UNICAL.

4. Through JUPEB
JUPEB means Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board. Like predegree, JUPEB is a one-year intensive programme. However, they are slightly different.
UNICAL runs JUPEB programme. On completion, you are given direct entry admission to start from 200 level. Though not all UNICAL courses are available through JUPEB.
5. Through Sandwich
UNICAL also offers sandwich programmes. These programmes run for six months or more, depending on the course.
Sandwich programmes are majorly those in the faculty of education.
6. Through CES
CES in UNICAL means Centre for Educational Services. It is also a popular way to get admission into UNICAL.
The UNICAL CES programme last for five (5) years for students admitted with SSCE. And runs for four (4) years for students admitted with diploma or certificate.
On completing the UNICAL CES programme, you are awarded a bachelor’s degree. However, not all courses are available through CES.

7. Through diploma
If you’re looking to gain admission into a short course in UNICAL, this diploma may suite you.
UNICAL diploma programmes last for two (2) years. The certificate qualifies you for direct entry admission into degree programmes offered by the University of Calabar.
