One major challenge medical undergraduates in Nigeria face is that of finding a place to do IT or internship. Both of are requirements for the award of a Bachelors’ degree in most fields.
In this post, I will mention the hospitals where students of Nutrition and Dietetics can do their IT or Internship.
Let me begin by stating that Human Nutrition and Dietetics is a medical course.
In fact its a course in the College of Medical Sciences in most universities such as University of Ibadan and University of Calabar.
While its a course in the Faculty of Agriculture in some Universities such as Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Also, Nutrition and Dietetics is in the Faculty of Agriculture in most polytechnics and in Faculty of Science in some others.
Regardless of the faculty or school, Human Nutrition and Dietetics is a course that plays vital roles in the health profession.
So whether you are undergoing your academic training at a University or in a Polytechnic, this post is just for you.
Let me also add that Human Nutrition and Dietetics is a course that has severe medical application.
Why?
Nutrition and Dietetics is the application of the science of nutrition in order to prevent and treat diseases as well as to promote health.
For those in the universities, a one-year Internship in a medical facility is compulsory to be a Dietitian.
That is, if you desire to be a Registered Dietitian (RD).

You’re still looking for available hospitals to do your IT as a Nutrition and Dietetics student, as well as your internship as a Dietetics graduate. Right?

Below are the list of Hospitals you can get Dietetics internship placement in 2024.
1. Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH)
It is an affiliate of the Delta State University (Abraka) and is located along Otefe Road, off Benin-Warri Express Way, Oghara, Delta State.
DELSUTH has a specialist dietitian who is a part of their multidisciplinary health care team. The Dietitian is highly trained in preparation of special diets for Patients based on their medical conditions and specific nutrient needs.
The Dietetics department of the DELSUTH work across a wide range of Clinical Departments and provides support to patients with varying medical conditions.
These include type I and type II diabetes, Hypertension, Stroke, High Blood Pressure, Cancer, Kidney problems e.t.c.
2. University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH)
Located at Abak Road, Uyo-Akwa Ibom State, UUTH is one of the foremost hospitals in Nigeria housing the Dietetics department.
The hospital has since been training students on industrial attachment, and only recently commenced dietetics internship.
This was where I did my three months Industrial attachment. And I can testify you will learn and improve there.
The services rendered by the Dietetics unit at UUTH headed by Dtn. Nwazuluoke Blessing include:
1. Diet Therapy.
2. Dietary Counselling.
3. Nutrition Education / health talk.
4. Nutritional Outreach and Seminars.
5. Participation in ward round in medical wards.
6. Food Service: Here, they prepare and serve special meals for in-patients on therapeutic diet as well as provide the following diets:
- Fat/cholesterol reducing diets.
- Low calorie diets.
- Low salt diet.
- Soft diets.
- Renal diet.
- High fibre diet
The dietitians at UUTH include Dtn. Nwazuluoke Blessing (Head of Unit), Dtn. Comfort Afangide, Dtn. Uwanna Raphael. As well as other staff at the newly established Dietetics kitchen and restaurant.
One remarkable thing about doing your IT at UUTH is that you get to learn a whole lot because they are very welcoming.
The unit under the leadership of Dtn. Blessing is in the process of securing accreditation for Dietetics Internship program, meaning they currently don’t accept Interns at this time.
I will update this post as soon as UUTH gets accreditation for Dietetics Internship.
3. University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) – accredited for IT and Internship
UBTH was taken over by the Federal Government on April 1st, 1975 as the fifth teaching hospital in Nigeria.
The Dietetics department in UBTH is one of the most equipped in the country, catering for tons of patients on a regular basis.
Dietitians and nutritionists in UBTH plan, implement and oversee nutrition and food service programs. Dietitians are part of an interdisciplinary team that work closely with Medical Doctors and Nurses.
Among other things, they work to identify and implement nutrition programs for in-patients, out-patients, and staff.
Some of their services include:
i. Participation in consultant ward rounds for in-patients.
ii. Lecturing student nurses and other categories of nursing officers on the importance of therapeutic diets.
iii. Training of Dietetic Interns and those in Industrial Training Attachments.
4. University of Portharcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH)
UPTH Dietetics department is made up of Dietitians and supporting staff/ Diet Cooks. The department presently has four (4) Dietitians/Nutritionist.
The hospital presently receives Students for Industrial Training Attachment and one-year internship in Nutrition and Dietetics.
Most of my colleagues did their IT at UPTH, as well as some senior colleagues I know who did their Internship there.
They all shared wonderful experiences of their time at the teaching hospital.
5. Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH)
LUTH is located in Lagos and have been receiving students for Industrial Attachment and Internship for some years running.
The Department of Nutrition and Food Services of LUTH consists of Registered Dietitians (RD) who provide in-patients and out-patients nutrition services.
6. University College Hospital (UCH)
Located in Ibadan, UCH is the first teaching hospital in Nigeria and boasts of a robust Dietetics department.
The department was established in 1975, and has since trained well over one hundred (100) Interns. The department also receive students on Industrial Attachment and internship.
Remarkably, it is probably has the best functioning Nutrition and Dietetics unit. Thanks to their facilities and the amazing services they offer.
I have been there on two occasion and I was quite impressed by how Dietetics is run at UCH.
7. National Hospital Abuja
It is located at Plot 132, National Hospital Road, Central Business District, Garki, Abuja.
National Hospital Abuja is approved to train students of Human Nutrition and Dietetics on Industrial Attachment. Though its not accredited yet for the mandatory one-year internship.
I had some colleagues who did their industrial attachment at the National hospital in Abuja. I could share all their great learning experiences with you.
Bottom line is, they have welcoming Dietitians that are dedicated to seeing you learn something during your IT.
8. Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC)
The Dietetics department at OAUTHC is under the Clinical Services unit. The Dietitians at OAUTHC make dietary modification for different disease conditions.
Presently, the hospital trains Nutrition and Dietetics students on 3 months IT as well as Dietetics Interns under the supervision of Registered Dietitians (RD).
The unit focuses mainly on managing in-patients and out-patients with various disease conditions using diet therapy.
Interns at OAUTHC also go on ward rounds in various clinical units including paediatrics, surgery, out-patient units, obstetrics, and gynaecology under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian.
9. Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital (AEFUTHA)
This hospital is located in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state capital.
Dietetics program is well recognized here. Although the hospital only recently received accreditation to train Dietetics interns, they have been doing well on the job.
In fact, the Nutrition and Dietetics students at Ebonyi State University take their hospital courses here. They also take part in ward rounds in final year where they do Diet Therapy and Hospital Practice (part II).
The bottom line is that AEFUTHA accepts students for three months IT and graduates for the one year internship program.
In fact at the end of AEFUTHA 2019 internship recruitment for Dietetics internship, a total of 61 persons were successful.
That’s a huge number compared to the number absorbed by some other teaching hospitals that run dietetics internship program in the country.
10. University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu State
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is fondly called Nutrition and Dietetics headquarter in Nigeria. Maybe because many recognized Nutritionists and Dietitians finished from UNN.
Their affiliated hospital, UNTH is one of the best hospitals for Industrial Training and Internship for Nutrition and Dietetics students.
Most colleagues of mine did their training at UNTH. They returned with sufficient knowledge about hospital practice of Nutrition and Dietetics.
UNTH is one of the foremost hospitals for Nutrition and Dietetics internship in Nigeria. The hospital has gone far in dietetics practice, making it one of the few hospitals where Dietetics is really practiced.
Most Dietitians in Nigeria have either undergone internship or worked at UNTH.
11. University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) – accredited for IT
This is my school teaching hospital – I have a Bachelor’s degree (in view) in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Calabar.
Good enough, UCTH is not very far and its located just beside the university, only sharing a fence.
UCTH started accepting Nutrition and Dietetics students on Industrial Attachment (IT) when I got to year 3 (which was in 2019). Although the Dietetics unit of the hospital is yet to secure accreditation for one year internship program.
Even the IT program they are doing is still very sketchy at this time. Therefore, my department rebuked students (starting from my set) from taking their IT at UCTH citing inadequate facilities and poor learning structure for students as the reasons.
Bottom line is, UCTH accepts students for the three months IT program. However, the training is below standard and this put intending IT students off.
UCTH is also not accredited yet to run the one year internships for Dietetics. See the Full list of University of Calabar UNICAL courses (accredited)
If you need my personal opinion as a Dietetics student in UNICAL, I don’t recommend UCTH for your Nutritiona nd Dietetics IT.
Why?
Because you may not learn many things.
I had personally been there. Major upgrade is needed to bring the unit to the standard of training Nutrition and Dietetics IT students and interns.
12. Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Park Lane, Enugu
ESUTH currently train Nutrition and Dietetics IT students. Though the hospital is not accredited for internship yet.
The Nutrition and Dietetics department at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital is functional. They counsel both in-patients/outpatients with various diet-related diseases.
The department also runs a mini-kitchen for patients that are malnourished, and this covers all clinics and wards in the hospital.
So you will be able to learn a lot doing your IT at ESUTH.
13. Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta
FMC Abeokuta has started taking Dietetics students for IT and internship. The dietetics department at FMC Abeokuta under Mrs. Akinwande (HOD) is a great place to learn more during industrial attachment as well as internship. And they pay dietetics interns well too.
14. Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu
Surprised? Dietitians also work in psychiatric hospitals.
The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Enugu is also a great place to do your dietetics internship.
15. Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH)
JUTH is one of the most welcoming places to get further training as a dietetics professional. Whether you’re going for dietetics IT or dietetics internship, you’ll have a platform to learn and earn in Jos.
16. Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti
This hospital was recently approved for Dietetics in Nigeria, as announced at the 2021 Institute of Dietitians in Nigeria (IDN) conference.
17. Federal Medical Centre, Owerri
FMC Owerri is one of the coolest hospitals for Nutrition and Dietetics IT, as well as Dietetics internship. The hospital has been accepting students for Industrial Attachment and Graduates for internship for some years now. So it’s a great place to learn more about the dietetics profession.
18. Federal Medical Centre, Asaba
FMC Asaba accepts only IT students for now.
19. Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi (NAUTH)
NAUTH, Nnewi accepts Nutrition and Dietetics IT students.
20. Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria (ABUTH)
Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital accepts candidates for both Nutrition and Dietetics internship and IT.

Am a student of Federal university of Agriculture, Abeokuta. I tried getting a placement at FMC but they’re no more accepting people and since I based in Ibadan I am presently processing my IT placement at University Teaching Hospital (UCH) Ibadan.
Though we’re to pay a sum of 50,000 naira. Seeing the money is much do you think it worth it or should I rather get a placement at Oni and sons pediatric hospital in Ring road, ibadan?

I learnt University Teaching hospital Ibadan is now requiring for 50000 from public university student Seeking for IT placement.

From whom did you hear it from? Because IT placement don’t cost the student any money. In fact, you are supposed to be paid for your IT period by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), including those doing their IT at Ibadan.

The exact amount depend slightly on the hospital because of deductions. But generally, dietetics interns are paid between 95,000 t0 150,000 naira.

No. You’ll have to make your own accommodation arrangement. All you need is to submit your IT letter (from your school) there. Once its approved, you can start your IT.

It’s completely fine you asked. If there’s any issue with non-payment, it has to do with the hospital and not generally. Moreover, there are also other hospitals owing interns months allowance.

That depends on the postgraduate entry requirement of the university you want to gain entry into.

Yes, of course . Normally, dietetics internship programme does not require NYSC discharge certificate. It’s still part of your training in the profession. It’s only in Nutrition and Dietetics profession that one may do internship before or after NYSC scheme. Other medical and health professions do not allow such. For them, it must be internship before NYSC. Therefore, if you can get your B.Sc statement of result before the deadline of any internship application, you should apply for the placement because you’re eligible.

Yes, provided your statement of result is ready. Though in dietetics, we have a culture of going to nysc before internshop.

One don’t. Once you finish your undergraduate degree and your NYSC, then you proceed for your dietetics internship.

No. The requirement to apply for internship is a bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. That’s the basic requirement to become a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN).
Please do it mean that a master holder in Nutrition and Dietetics can not be a registered dietetian?
Completing the mandatory one-year dietetics internship at an accredited health facility is the standard requirement to become a registered dietitian.

Yes you can do your IT at teaching hospital. Which hospital do you like to do it?
What’s your advice on someone that is a graduate of anatomy but has Interest in Nutrition and dietetics, is it possible for the person to serve(Nysc) and still work in the nutrition department at any of the Universities you recommended?
Being a Nutritionist is not possible for a graduate of anatomy. My advice is to return to school either through UTME (from 100 level) or Direct Entry (from 200 level) to study Nutrition and Dietetics.

Hello Maxwell, I graduated with a second class lower degree in 2016 from a private university, I studied nutrition and dietetics ofcourse. Now I’m thinking of going for my internship. What do you think my chances are of getting in and if it’s too late.
It’s not too late, you can still get it cause your chance is good provided you have the degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Also, class of degree (whether second class upper or lower) doesn’t hamper your chances in any way. Go for it!

When will all these universities listed be accredited for internship? This matter should be regarded as a matter of utmost importance and should be given the urgency it requires. It would be wrong to make internship mandatory when the universities listed are yet to be accredited for the programme. Don’t you think it would cause stagnation for the students who are expected to pass through this and commence work asap? Please the management concerned should expedite action to enable the children progress rapidly. Thank you.
It’s quite unfortunate as it is and I hope the management of those hospitals take urgent steps to improve Dietetics unit. Although some run internship in Nutrition and Dietetics already. University College Hospital Ibadan, UNIPORT teaching hospital, and Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki are accredited for Dietetics internship.

Yes. The thing with the field of Nutrition and Dietetics is that, not every hospital or facility train dietetics professionals. In fact, out of the many hospitals in Nigeria, very few are eligible to train Nutrition and Dietetics professionals.
