The Japan-IMF scholarships offer opportunity to study for a doctoral degree at universities outside Japan.

This scholarship is one of the most prestigious doctoral scholarships for international students.

What’s the value of this award?

The Japan-IMF scholarship covers the costs of two years of graduate study including:

  • Full university tuition and fees;
  • Medical insurance;
  • Monthly living allowance;
  • Selected travel expenses; and
  • Paid summer internship.

To cover the remaining years of study, recipients of this scholarship are expected to secure another source of funding. This is usually through Research or Teaching Assistantship at your university.

Can I know more about Japan-IMF scholarship?

i. This scholarship is provided by the Government of Japan through the Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies (JISP).

ii. This award is given in partnership with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

iii. The Japan-IMF scholarship is available for two years graduate study only.

iv. This scholarship is offered each year. Up to seven (7) scholarships are awarded annually on a competitive basis to students with exceptional academic record.

v. All recipients of this scholarship are required to apply to the IMF’s Economist Program (EP) upon completion of their doctoral studies.

And they’re also required to accept an EP position if offered. Students who do not comply with this condition will be asked to repay the scholarship cost.

However, you should bear in mind that the IMF will not be able to accommodate all JISP scholars who apply for employment at the Fund.

Especially because there are many applicants for each available position and the selection process is usually competitive.

Which programs are covered?

Only the following fields of study are eligible for funding through the Japan-IMF scholarship program.

  • Macroeconomics;
  • Finance;
  • Public finance;
  • Monetary economics;
  • International economics;
  • International trade;
  • Poverty issues;
  • Political economy;
  • Econometrics.

Which Nationalities are eligible?

Japan-IMF scholarship is open to citizens of Japan only.

Am I eligible?

To be considered for this scholarship, you must:

1. A Japanese citizen;

2. Be able to obtain a Ph.D by age 34 years of age;

3. Studying at, or applying to a Ph.D program in any of the eligible study areas above at a university outside Japan.

4. Entering the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of a Ph.D program.

Note: Japan-IMF scholarships are awarded in the spring semester for studies starting in the Fall semester of that same year. You should apply directly to a university outside Japan for admission.

How do I apply?

The application for this scholarship must be completed online through the link below.

It should be completed in English and should include the following:

i. A personal statement focusing on your background, career goals, and interest in working as an IMF economist;

ii. A transcript of your previous studies at university. However if you are already a graduate student, your current university transcript is required;

iii. GRE and IELTS or TOEFL scores;

iv. A copy of your application to a Ph.D program; and

v. Two (2) reference letters.
