Value of this award
A Mandela Rhodes scholarship cover:
- Tuition and registration fees as set by your university or institution (South African school).
- Study materials allowance as set by Mandela Rhodes Foundation.
- Accommodation and meal allowances as set by Mandela Rhodes Foundation.
- A medical aid allowance as set by the Mandela Rhodes Foundation.
- A personal allowance as set by Mandela Rhodes Foundation.
- Research and conferencing grants can be made available on request by successful candidates.
- Economy-class flights from your home country to your school at the start and end of your studies.
Please note that:
Allowances for recipients of Mandela Rhodes scholarships are paid twice a year. And these allowances are paid directly to you.
You will need to provide a proof of registration at the start of the session to receive your allowance.
Meanwhile, your course fees including tuition fees are paid directly to your school.
Can I know more about Mandela Rhodes scholarships?
i. Mandela Rhodes scholarships are provided by the Mandela Rhodes Foundation.
ii. The scholarships are offered to African students to study in South Africa.
iii. These awards are given each year to deserving African students to study for a full-time postgraduate degree at a South African university or other institution.
iv. Mandela Rhodes scholarship is tenable for two years.
While you’ll be funded for one or two years if you’re awarded Mandela Rhodes scholarship for a Masters degree, you receive funding for one year if you’re taking an Honours degree.
v. Mandela Rhodes scholarship does not fund undergraduate study in South Africa. Therefore, students who want to study at undergraduate level are not part of this scholarship.
vi. Furthermore, students who are completing their undergraduate degree in 2021 qualify for this scholarship. Provided they complete their undergraduate degree before the commencement of the scholarship in January 2022.

No matter where you live, you’re eligible for Mandela Rhodes scholarship if you’re a citizen of an African country.
Who’s eligible to apply?
To be considered for a Mandela Rhodes scholarship, you must:
- Be a citizen of an African country.
- Be willing to study in South Africa starting January 2022.
- Be studying for a full-time postgraduate degree course.
- Not be more than 29 years old at the time of applying. Therefore, you should be under 30 years when starting the scholarship.
