Things you need for NYSC camp | Batch A II 2024

Preparing for camp? In this post I’ll guide you through everything you will need for the NYSC orientation camp. It will also highlight basic things you need to know about life in NYSC camp.

First, let’s get a heads up.

Once called for national service after confirming your name on senate list, you immediately begin to prepare for camp.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp is a compulsory three weeks (21 days) fully residential programme.

At the camp, you will receive all the relevant information that will guide you through your entire service year. NYSC officials will ensure you get all you need.

It’s also packed with other outdoor and indoor activities.

Such as man-o-war drills. Morning and evening parade. Morning  meditation. Sporting activities. Drama and Debates competition. Mr. Mancho and Miss NYSC competition.

Also expect the Skills and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) lectures and hands-on practical training on various skills.

SAED lectures can be really long and boring. But its often beneficial, especially the training aspect.

You may have a different story.

So you’re going to camp. What are the things you should ready?

Below are things you need for NYSC orientation camp.

1.  Register online at any accredited NYSC registration center. This will enable you receive the following required documents in camp:

  • NYSC Green Slip
  • NYSC Call-up letter

Once you complete your NYSC online registration, the documents above will become available to you. You will need them to complete your registration at the orientation camp.

2.  Collect your Original Certificate or Statement of Result

You’ll need your statement of result or original certificate to complete your registration in camp. Make sure you have gotten it from your school in advance.

Moreover, while some schools (like UNICAL) give original certificate, others give only statement of result. Make sure you collect either of them before leaving school.

3.  Obtain a student I.D card from your institution

School ID card is very important, especially if it’s statement of result you have. Though this requirement can be skipped for those with original certificate.

Regardless of the category you’re in, ensure you are with your school ID card before proceeding to the orientation camp.

4. Ten (10) passport photograph

Ready 10 passport that you will use in camp. It’s basically about nine passports you will need to complete your registration in camp, but just carry ten in case one fall off your file.

What do you need them for? Once you enter camp, you will document first (some passports will go). You’ll register with the platoon you’re assigned to (many passports will go). And then register for nysc ID card (1 passport is required).

In case you intend to apply for relocation in camp, you’ll also attach a passport to your application.

For married female prospective corp members (PCMs), in addition to the above, you will also need:

  • marriage certificate
  • evidence of change of name
  • copy of husband’s ID card
  • proof of husband’s place of residence

As a married female PCM, the documents above are essential if you wish to be posted to your husband’s local government of residence.

Those are the documents you’ll need to complete your registration at the NYSC orientation camp.

What else do I need for NYSC orientation camp?

Below is a toolkit for you.

1. White Shirts and Shorts

You can get one each, because NYSC will give you two each in camp.

In fact, nysc will give you the following in camp:

  • 1 belt
  • 1 face cap
  • 1 crested vest
  • 1 pair of jungle boot
  • 1 khaki trouser and longsleeve
  • 2 pairs of socks
  • 2 pairs of white shirt
  • 2 pairs of white short

2. Carnival attires

Carnival is one of the activities at the camp. Regardless of where you are from, that day is a native day. So ensure you package at least one native attire among your clothes.

By the way, cultural carnival at nysc camp is usually fun.

3. Bucket and Serving Can

To bath, you’ll need both. You can always get them at mami market inside the nysc camp.

4. Toiletries

With an eye on your personal hygiene, carry your toiletries. This include soaps, tissue, sponge, what have you. You can equally buy these items in the camp.

5. Plate and Cutlery

Remember this one, except you don’t want to eat. I even recommend you carry food flask instead. It will be more useful to you in camp as you’ll soon see.

Since nysc normally serve 3 meals a day at the orientation camp, carrying food flask will ensure you’re always able to preserve your food.

6. Cash

You already know the cash situation in the country. So make sure to carry some cash along with you. At least, one that can last you at least two weeks without having to withdraw.

If there is difficulty withdrawing cash outside, it’s twice as difficult inside nysc camp.

Though you can make purchases with bank transfer or POS, there are other small things you can’t pay for electronically. If you’re the type that like small chops, you can relate.

Aside chops, you may have need to amend your nysc kits, your bag, or other service you may need. They won’t accept transfer.

So basically, below are nysc orientation camp kits:

  • NYSC green slip
  • NYSC call-up letter
  • Original certificate or statement of result
  • School ID card
  • 10 passports
  • For married women: marriage certificate, evidence of change of name, copy of husband’s ID card, proof of husband’s place of residence.
  • White shirt and short (1 each recommended)
  • carnival attire (native and/jean, depending on the carnival your camp decide)
  • Bucket and serving can
  • Toiletries
  • Plate and cutlery
  • Cash

Please follow this advice to limit your chances of getting stranded in camp. I wish you a successful time at the nysc orientation camp.
