Application is now open for the 2022 Payne Graduate Fellowship program in the United States. The eligibility criteria, how to apply, and deadline is found below.
The Payne Graduate Fellowship is awarded annually. Up to fifteen (15) fellowships are given in each application year.
How much is the fellowship worth?
Basically, the Payne Graduate Fellowship program is worth up to $48,000 annually for two years. This amount include:
i. up to $22,000 per year toward tuition and mandatory fees for completion of a two-year master’s degree at a U.S. institution;
ii. a $16,000 stipend for each academic year for room, board, books and other education-related expenses; and
iii. up to $10,000 per year in stipend, housing, transportation, and related expenses for summer placements.

Which programs does the fellowship cover?
At the end of the fellowship program, you are expected to obtain a degree in international development or another area of relevance to the work of the USAID Foreign Service at any US school approved by the Payne Fellowship Program.
Those who successfully complete the Payne Graduate Fellowship Program and USAID Foreign Service entry requirements will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers with the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Who can apply?
To become eligible, you must:
1. be seeking admission to enter graduate school in Fall 2022 at U.S. university for a two-year program.
You can however, be in the senior year of your undergraduate studies (graduating by June 2022 at the latest), or you can simply be a college graduate.
2. have a CGPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale at the time of applying for the fellowship.

How to apply for the fellowship
In order to apply, you’ll need the following:
Background Information (e.g., name, contact information, international travel);
A personal statement (in 600 words or less) that explains your reasons for applying, interest in foreign affairs, commitment to pursue a USAID Foreign Service career and any relevant experience or information;
A personal statement (in 400 words or less);
Two letters of recommendation;
Proof of U.S. citizenship.
