This scholarship covers tuition fees and stipend. Though the scholarship amount for tuition is calculated based on home tuition fees.
That means as an international, you’ll cover the difference in home and international fee rate if awarded this scholarship.
Here is the breakdown of the scholarship value:
- Home tuition rate only: £4,500 (fees) and
- £15,609 (stipend).
That was the scholarship amount in the 2021/2022 academic year. The amount for the 2022/2023 academic year hasn’t been announced by the UK Research Councils at the time of publishing this information.

Which programs does the scholarship cover?
This scholarship covers study in science field. More specifically, the scholarship funds postgraduate study in the area of “developing an artificial gut microbiome platform to understand the role of symbiotic and pathogenic microbes.”
Who is eligible?
To be able to receive this scholarship, you should meet the following criteria:
1. be a highly motivated, efficient, creative and punctual student with an interest in multidisciplinary research.
2. be expected to have a bachelor’s degree (second class upper 2:1 or higher) in:
- Biosciences,
- Chemistry, or
- a related discipline, with some experience in cell culturing and/or microbiome-related work.
How about nationality?
This scholarship is open to applicants from any country.

What else do I need to know?
Please note the following important information regarding this scholarship. You will need:
1. Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate technical information.
2. Good technical lab skills.
3. Ability to set up experiments with due care and attention.
4. Ability to take direction, follow protocols and pick up techniques quickly.
5. Be keen to learn new technical skills with regard to operation.
6. If you’re applying for a PhD, you’re expected to hold a bachelor’s degree (at least second class upper 2:1) or an MSc (at Merit or Distinction) in a relevant, appropriate subject, or the equivalent from an internationally recognised institution.
7. Recipients of this scholarship have to spend at least 12 months at Kent, UK and Lille, France.
