Canadian Universities Tuition Deposit (2024)

Going to study in Canada next term? If yes, you probably have started to prepare.

It’s also likely that finance is high on your checklist as you plan your study in Canada experience. This page will guide you through one of the aspects of finance – tuition deposit.

An admission deposit or tuition deposit or acceptance deposit or registration deposit is an amount of money you pay after getting admission at a Canadian university. It is paid against your first year tuition fees.

Most Canadian universities require international students to pay an admission deposit while accepting admission offer. Your deposit payment confirms that you accept the offer of admission

In fact, you won’t be able to apply or receive the necessary documentation to apply for a Canadian study permit unless you have first paid your deposit. Yes, you read that.

Most programs at leading Canadian universities are highly competitive. Paying your admission deposit enable the university to retain your place. It’s like an insurance cover to secure your offer.

Moreover, if your admission is not complete (which includes accepting your offer), you will be unable to apply for a study permit to study in Canada. Most universities require you to make payment of your admission deposit within 30 days of the date of offer in order to confirm your admission.

And once you pay your admission confirmation deposit, you are able to apply for a Canadian study permit.

To help with your finance preparation, I knew you would be asking, how much is admission deposit? The amount payable as tuition deposit vary across universities. Fortunately, I’ve done the research for you.

This blogpost highlight the admission deposit of all universities in Canada (except those not collecting deposit). The universities on this list made it because they have a tuition fee deposit.

But then, you may probably be thinking admission deposit is free money to university. It is not.

Let’s see an illustration.

Assuming Prisca from Africa got admission to study XY course at ABC university in Canada. Her tuition fee is $20,000 CAD. ABC university requires a deposit of $1,500 CAD against international students tuition.

Prisca pays her tuition deposit and start applying for study permit. On arrival in Canada (or before), she pays the balance tuition of $18,500 CAD to complete her tuition fee.

We now see the tuition deposit is an amount paid against the total tuition. Depending on the Canadian university, your tuition deposit goes toward your first semester or first year fees.

Hopefully, we are clear. Now let me take you across Canada.

But while I do that, let also reveal to you that tuition deposit is different from application fee. While you pay a tuition deposit once you have admission, application fee is paid to the university when you want to submit your application. You can check through all Canadian universities application fee.

So this post you’re reading now is about tuition deposit. Am hopeful you have gotten it.
