International students who want to study in the UK from 2021 for a postgraduate degree can apply for Overseas Research Scholarships and Graduate Research Scholarships.

Applicants for this scholarship should be willing to study at the University College London (UCL).

What’s the value of this award?

Overseas research scholarship

The amount of the overseas research scholarship covers the difference between Overseas and UK home tuition fees.

Those who don’t have any other fund will receive additional University College London funding to cover the UK tuition fees for the duration of this scholarship.

This scholarship does not cover living costs. Therefore, you are advised to seek other funds to cover your living expenses.

Graduate research scholarship

This scholarship consist of the equivalent fees to the standard postgraduate UK rate (2021/22: £5,526 – tbc) plus a maintenance stipend (2021/22: £17,631 – tbc) for full-time study (benefits are calculated ‘pro rata’ for part-time students).

The scholarship also includes additional research costs of up to £1,200 per year for duration of your programme.

Can I know more about this scholarship?

i. The scholarship is provided by the University College London (UCL) through its Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS) scheme.

ii. This scholarship is awarded for research degrees only.

iii. The award is held through year 1, 2, and 3 of a full-time MPhil/PhD/EngD degree programme.

For part-time degree programme, it’s held for years 1 to, subject to annual renewal.

And if you’re taking an integrated four-year doctoral programmes, the scholarship will be extended to your final year.

iv. If you’re awarded this scholarship, you’ll begin to receive the scholarship amount from the start of the next academic year.

Which programs are covered?

All MPhil/PhD/EngD programmes at University College London are eligible for funding through this scholarship.

Distance learning degrees are not covered by this scholarship.

Which Nationalities are eligible?

This scholarship is open to students from any country outside the UK.

Am I eligible?

To be considered for the overseas research scholarship, you must:

1. Have an admission offer to, or currently registered at UCL on a full – or part-time research degree programme;

2. Be holding or expecting to have at least a second-class upper (2:1) of bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.

3. Be liable to pay tuition fees at the overseas student rate. That is, you should be an international student.

How do I apply?

Please follow the application procedure below to apply for this scholarship.

Step 1: Apply for admission to UCL

You must apply for a research degree programme before the application deadline.

You do not need to have been given admission before you apply for the scholarship. Though you must have submitted your course application.

You can ignore this first step if you’re already a student of UCL or hold an admission.

Step 2: Submit your scholarship application

Contact your academic department/institute/division/unit to notify them that you would like to be considered for a scholarship.

You must submit your documents as part of your application.

Make sure to check directly with the administrative staff in your departmental office for guidance on where to submit your application documents.

When is the deadline?
