2021 Swedish government scholarships for masters (fully funded)

The Swedish government scholarships (also called Swedish institute scholarships) is one of the most prestigious scholarships for international students to study abroad.

Swedish government scholarships are awarded to international students who want to study for a full-time masters degree at a Swedish university. That is, one-year or two-year master’s programmes

Value of this award

The Swedish government scholarships cover:

  • Tuition fees (paid directly by the Swedish government to individual universities).
  • Living expenses of SEK 10,000/month.
  • Travel grant of SEK 15,000 (one-time payment for the entire study period.)
  • Insurance against illness and accident.
  • Membership of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL) – a platform to help you grow professionally and build your network while in Sweden.
  • Membership of the SI Alumni Network after your scholarship period – a platform for continued networking and further professional development.

However the scholarship does not cover costs for family members.

Can I know more about Swedish government scholarships?

i. This scholarship is provided by the government of Sweden through the Swedish Institute (a government agency).

ii. Swedish institute scholarships are awarded each year to international students who desire to study for a full-time master’s degree in Sweden staring Autumn of 2021.

iii. The scholarship is fully funded and covers all costs of your masters programme. These costs have been well specified in the scholarship value section above.

iv. Up to 300 scholarships are available each year for international students.

Which programs are covered?

Over 600 master’s degree programmes offered by Swedish universities are eligible for funding.

Moreover, priority is usually given to masters degree areas that focus on contributing to the United Nations Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Which Nationalities are eligible?

International students from the following countries are eligible for Swedish Institute scholarships:

  • Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil;
  • Cambodia, Cameroon, Colombia;
  • Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia;
  • Gambia, Ghana, Guatemala;
  • Honduras;
  • Indonesia;
  • Jordan;
  • Kenya;
  • Liberia;
  • Malawi, Morocco, Myanmar (Burma);
  • Nepal, Nigeria;
  • Pakistan, Peru, Philippines;
  • Rwanda;
  • Sri Lanka, Sudan;
  • Tanzania, Tunisia;
  • Uganda,
  • Vietnam,
  • Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Only citizens of the countries above are considered for the Swedish institute scholarships. Though you might not necessarily reside in the country at the time of applying.

Who’s eligible?

To be considered for Swedish Institute scholarships you must:

1. Be a citizen of one of the eligible countries above.

2. Have least 3,000 hours’ work experience before 9 February 2021 from a maximum of three organisations/companies (full-time or part-time).

Though you don’t need to be employed at the time of applying.

3. Have proof of work and leadership experience. They should be well documented.

4. Be admitted by a Swedish university into one of the master’s degree programme by 3 April 2021.

How do I apply?

Application window for this scholarship is very short.

Online application for Swedish Institute scholarships will commence on 16 October, 2020.

What documents do I need?

To help you prepare upfront for a successful application, below are the required documents to apply for Swedish Institute scholarships:

1. A motivation letter: a form is provided on the application, so you fill your motivation there and upload.

2. A Curriculum Vitae (CV): a form is provided on the application, so you simply fill your CV and upload.

Your CV should not be more than 3 pages, so carefully decide on the most important details to include so it don’t exceed 3 pages.

3. Two different letters of reference:

Any advice?

One reference letter must be based on your work experience. While the second letter of reference should be based on your involvement in other activities (organizations, volunteer, civil society) outside your normal work.

The letters should printed, signed by your referee and stamped with an official stamp of the referred organisation or a notary office before uploading as PDF when applying.

4. Proof of work and leadership experience: a form for work experience is not available on the application.

Provide a work and leadership experience document and it should be signed by your referee.

5. A copy of your international passport: your personal information on your passport should be readable.

Your passport should be included together with your CV as a last fourth page.

What if I don’t have a passport?

Its your responsibility to make sure that you have an international passport ready to apply for Swedish government scholarships.

Deadline

Closing date for applying for Swedish government scholarships is 20 February, 2021.
