Aga Khan Foundation scholarships for postgraduate abroad 2021

Applications are welcome from international graduate students for Aga Khan Foundation scholarships to study abroad starting 2022.

This scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and involvement in extracurricular activities.

What’s the value of this award?

Aga Khan Foundation scholarships cover tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in this scholarship.

What if I’m going for PhD?

Funding for PhD program is only provided for the first two years of study. Thereafter, you are expected to find alternative source of assistance.

You are therefore advised to make effort in seeking alternative source of funding too. So that the funding you need from Aga Khan Foundation can be reduced to a minimum.

Note: Preference is given to applicants who have been able to secure some funding from other sources.

Can I know more about this scholarship?

i. The scholarship is provided by Aga Khan Foundation.

ii. There are limited number of scholarships each year to students from selected developing countries who have no other means of funding their postgraduate studies abroad.

iii. These scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant: 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July.

Which programs are covered?

Aga Khan Foundation gives priority to requests for Master’s level courses through this scholarship.

Though its willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, only in the case of outstanding students who are highly recommended for doctoral studies by their professors.

And who need a PhD for the fulfilment of their career objectives (academic or research oriented).

Note: Applications for short-term courses are not accepted.

Also, applications from students who have already started their course of study are not considered.

Which Nationalities are eligible?

Applications are accepted from citizens of the following countries:

Afghanistan Bangladesh
Egypt India
Kenya Kyrgyzstan
Madagascar Mozambique
Pakistan Syria
Tajikistan Tanzania
Uganda  

Am I eligible?

To be considered for Aga Khan Foundation scholarship, you must:

1. Be a national of one of the developing countries mentioned above.

2. Have an offer of admission for a postgraduate course at a university abroad.

NOTE: Aga Khan Foundation did not accept applications from students planning to attend universities in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, The Netherlands, Italy, Norway and Ireland during the 2020-21 application.

So its wise to seek postgraduate admission into universities in other countries other than those mentioned above.

3. Although there’s no specific age-limit, preference is given to students under 30 years old.

What’s the criteria for the scholarship award?

The criteria for selecting recipients of Aga Khan Foundation scholarships are:

1. Genuine financial need;

2. Admission to a highly reputable university or programme of study.

3. Consistently excellent academic records.

4. Relevance of the field of study to Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) focus areas.

How do I apply?

The 2021-22 application window has not opened. However, here’s the application procedure.

Obtain Aga Khan Foundation scholarship form from 1 January, 2021 from an AKF office in your country.

How do I submit my application form?

You are to return the completed application form to the office you obtained it from.

When is the deadline?

The closing date for receipt of scholarship applications is 31 March, 2021.

When will I learn of a decision?

Aga Khan Foundation scholarship committee meets yearly in June or early July.

Thereafter, the foundation notify all students of their application outcome. For full terms and conditions, please refer to their website.
