Applications for 2022 Carnegie PhD scholarships to study in UK are now open. These scholarships are available to undertake doctorate degree at UK university.

Carnegie scholarship is one of the most prestigious scholarship for PhD study in the UK. The award is funded by the Carnegie Trust. And the doctoral programme will start in the 2022-23 academic year.

What’s on offer?

According to the Carnegie Trust, a Carnegie PhD scholarship covers:

Stipend: its currently £17,400 for the academic year 2021-2022, adjusted annually for inflation.

Tuition Fees: The Trust will cover tuition fees at the Research Councils UK (RCUK) Indicative Fee Level for the relevant academic year (universities are expected to waive any outstanding balance).

Research Allowance: £3,000 for the whole tenure.

How many: A maximum of 12-15 PhD scholarships are awarded each year by the Carnegie Trust.

Which program does this scholarship cover?

The Carnegie PhD scholarship is open for doctoral study in any field at any of the following institutions:

a. Universities: Aberdeen, Abertay, Dundee, Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier, Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian, Heriot-Watt, Highlands and Islands, Queen Margaret, Robert Gordon, St Andrews, Stirling, Strathclyde, West of Scotland;

b. Glasgow School of Art;

c. Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Who’s eligible?

Candidates are usually nominated by any of the eligible universities in Scotland for a Carnegie PhD scholarship. You are eligible to be nominated for this scholarship if:

1. you already hold, or are on track to finish university with a First Class Honours degree from one of the eligible universities in Scotland.

2. Have an undergraduate degree in a course that is related to the academic field of your proposed doctoral research.

The Carnegie Trust says that those who are in faculties that don’t award Honours (like Medicine), are expected to  have achieved the equivalent standard to a First Class Honours degree.

3. you have been accepted on a doctoral programme at one of the eligible universities.

How about nationality?

This scholarship is open to students of any nationality, provided you meet the criteria above.

How to apply for the scholarship

As mentioned earlier, nomination is required to even be eligible for a Carnegie PhD scholarship. Take note of the details below.

To apply, you must be nominated by one of the 17 eligible institutions. And bear in mind that each institution has its own selection process, since the allocated quota is limited.

So here is what you need to do:

First, contact the Scottish institution where you desire to do your PhD to find out about their selection process.

NOTE: The Carnegie Trust says applicants can only be nominated by one eligible institution.
