Rhodes Scholarships are full scholarships for international students to study in UK. Each year, these scholarships are offered to international students to study at the University of Oxford.

If you are unable to study in the UK without financial support, check in. You may qualify for a Rhodes scholarship.

With a Rhodes scholarship, you can study most postgraduate courses offered by University of Oxford.

What’s in the scholarship?

Rhodes scholarship is fully funded. It covers the following costs:

  • Oxford University course fees, as well as providing an annual stipend.
  • For the 2022/23 academic year, the stipend is £18,180 per annum (£1,515 per month) from which awardees pay all living expenses, including accommodation. Please note – this is not sufficient to cover partners or dependents.
  • Once accepted for the scholarship, the Rhodes Trust will cover the fee required to apply to study at the University of Oxford.
  • Fee for a student visa and the associated International Health Surcharge (IHS), which enables international students to access the UK’s National Health Service.
  • Two economy class flights – to and from the UK – for the beginning and end of studies in Oxford.
  • Settling in allowance on arrival in Oxford. And for those Scholars who transition to a second course of study in Oxford, they will again receive assistance to cover the fee for visa renewal and further application for IHS.

Who is eligible

Depending on where you are from, specific eligibility criteria may apply to you. Regardless of your region, applicants must generally must the following criteria to be considered for a Rhodes scholarship.

1. Be a citizen of, and resident in an eligible country.

For applicants from West Africa region, you are eligible if you are a citizen and resident in:

  • Benin, Burkina Faso,
  • Cape Verde,
  • Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau,
  • Ivory Coast,
  • Liberia,
  • Mali, Mauritania,
  • Niger, Nigeria, the island of Saint Helena,
  • Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Principe
  • Togo.

Citizens and residents of other regions are also eligible for Rhodes Scholarship.

2. Be under the age of 27 on 1st October 2023. Under this criteria, you must also have completed your first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2022.

3. Have a bachelor’s degree with a grade that is a First Class Honours Degree or equivalent. In the case of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy courses, the highest classification your University awards, e.g. a Distinction would be considered equivalent to a First Class Honours Degree.

4. Have a sufficiently high standard of English to meet the University of Oxford’s English requirement. Alternatively, you should meet the University of Oxford’s requirements for an English Language test waiver.
